Cheating Charge Sec 420 Penal Code 1871 Reduced in Singapore

Our criminal defence lawyers acted for a client who faced a cheating charge under section 420 read with section 109 of the Penal Code for assisting in a transaction involving the delivery of goods.

We submitted detailed written representations to the Prosecution, highlighting the client’s limited involvement, full restitution, cooperation with the authorities, genuine remorse and absence of prior criminal convictions.

Following our representations, the Prosecution agreed to reduce the charge from section 420 to section 417 read with section 109.

At sentencing, we sought a community-based sentence instead of conventional imprisonment. The Court ultimately imposed a short detention order together with a community service order.

This case illustrates how carefully prepared criminal representations and mitigation pleas can play an important role in achieving a reduction of charges and a more favourable sentencing outcome in Singapore.

The following review was given by our client to Singapore Legal Advice :

“Mr. Louis and team are responsive, knowledgeable and professional. They patiently answered every question, no matter how small, to my satisfaction and gave timely updates regarding the progress and actions taken throughout the period that I had engaged them.”
